TeeSpeaks: Celebrating National Poetry Month Part 1

For National Poetry Month this April, Project Sleep is highlighting poets and poetry from our community. Launched by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Curated by Ana Lara.

Meet the Poet:

Hi my name is Antonia Green AKA TeeSpeaks or Tee. I’m from London, UK and I am 21 years old. I’m a joint honours photography & journalism student by day, a poet/spoken word artist by night and a narcoleptic 24/7. I may have narcolepsy type 2 but that will never stop me from trying to be number 1.

About the Poem:

My piece, Chronic Dreamer is inspired by the dreamier aspects of narcolepsy I experience, including vivid dreams and hallucinations. It’s me embracing and enjoying how big my imagination is and how having narcolepsy has enabled me to be creative.

Chronic Dreamer

by: TeeSpeaks

Some where between Cloud 19 and the narcoleptic galaxy is me.

A chronic dreamer

Who lives within a simultaneously

Real but alternate reality

So many people struggle to fall asleep but I struggle to stay awake

You wouldn’t know it but

I tend to sleep walk through my days

Night merges into day

Day merges into night

Hypnagogic hallucinations can turn reality into daydreams

Making me wonder if all in the real world is all it seems

Living in the Narcoleptic galaxy between Cloud 19 and reality

Keeps me believing in all of my wildest dreams

A truth seeker, true believer I am a chronic dreamer

Thank you, TeeSpeaks for sharing your work. More amazing poems from Project Sleep community members are coming soon!
