Giving Tuesday features Julie Flygare in #WomenWhoGive Series
Today, Giving Tuesday is featuring our President & CEO, Julie Flygare in their #WomenWhoGive series, which celebrates women who are making a difference in their communities.
In this unique post, Julie opens up about what got her started in philanthropy, explaining:
“You could say, a low point in my life inspired me to start giving. After being diagnosed with narcolepsy while in law school, I was surprised to learn that this chronic neurological condition was much more serious than public perceptions…”
Also, when asked why she continues to give back, Julie shared:
“It’s always strange when people thank me for my efforts. Of course I appreciate their appreciation. But honestly, it is the honor and joy of my lifetime to give back to others and help to build a brighter future together. Giving back makes my own experience with this condition worth it.”
What advice might Julie give to others looking to start making a difference in their community?
“My biggest advice would be 1. Do your research and 2. Start anywhere, don’t wait for permission.”
Lastly, Julie describes one of her favorite moments — calling the Jack & Julie Narcolepsy Scholarship recipients:
“This past year, when I called one of the Jack & Julie Narcolepsy Scholarship recipients to tell her she’d won the award, she broke down crying…”

When I read through the information on the Project Sleep scholarship recipients I am in awe of their courage and tenacity to get through school often with honors inspite of the challenges of their diagnoses. It reminds me of the struggle Julie had with this difficult diagnosis and also the determination she portrayed to live a quality of life inspite of having to manage her cataplexy and narcolepsy symptoms. Congratulations and best wishes to all the students.
