Bad Narcolepsy Joke Turns Honda into Awareness Partner
Honda Motor Co. has released a public service announcement (PSA) about the sleep disorder narcolepsy (view below). The PSA will begin airing on television starting November 6th, 2014. In June, Project Sleep’s Founder, Julie Flygare, led a Change.org petition requesting Honda pull a commercial featuring an offensive stereotype about the disorder. After quickly removing the ad and issuing an apology to the narcolepsy community, Honda offered to work with Julie and Project Sleep to create the PSA.
TRANSCRIPT: Everyday the world rises, but for those with narcolepsy, sleeping at night can be difficult and staying awake during the day is sometimes impossible. Narcolepsy affects 3 million people. Terrifying hallucinations can be confused with reality and emotions like laughter can lead to knee buckle or collapse. Do you rise when the world does or does your body tell you something else? I'm Julie Flygare and you're not alone with narcolepsy. -Julie Flygare, Narcolepsy Spokesperson www.project-sleep.com
