Sleep In 2023 Celebrated Rest & Recovery!

THANK YOU to all our participants and supporters who came together online to celebrate rest and recovery during Sleep In 2023 (#SleepIn2023)! The ninth annual Sleep In event took place from March 17-19, 2023. Participants were encouraged to prioritize sleep, rest, and self care while fundraising for Project Sleep.

During Sleep In 2023, 79 participants raised $5,693! Sleep In participants joined from all over the world including Australia, Canada, Kenya, Italy, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Sleep In 2023 Weekend Events

Interview with Diane Macedo

Sleep In 2023 kicked off on Friday afternoon with an interview with Diane Macedo (@dianermacedo). Macedo is an Emmy Award-winning news anchor and correspondent and best-selling author of “The Sleep Fix.” She is also a member of Project Sleep’s Expert Advisory Board.

Project Sleep President & CEO, Julie Flygare, talked with Macedo about her path into broadcast journalism and her journey with fixing her own insomnia. Later, Macedo shared a few practical, actionable tips from her book for better sleep.

Best Day Worst Day with Emma Cooksey

On Friday evening, we unwound on Instagram with Emma Cooksey, host of @SleepApneaStories podcast and member of Project Sleep’s Board of Directors and Expert Advisory Board. In this broadcast, six patient advocates joined Emma to share their best and worst days living with sleep disorders. 

Art Journaling with Julie Flygare

Saturday morning began with an interactive art journaling workshop with Project Sleep President & CEO Julie Flygare. As participants gathered their supplies, Julie talked about the purpose of art journaling and shared a few of her past art journal pages. Many of these pages visualized a goal or dream she has since accomplished! Then, together, we started a new page in our art journals.

Advocacy with CPAP Babes

Saturday night ended with Advocacy with CPAP Babes Stacy on Instagram Live. Stacy Erickson Edwards of @CPAPBabes started the stream by detailing her long and difficult journey with sleep apnea and idiopathic hypersomnia. She then shared her three principles for navigating and persevering through the labyrinth of diagnoses, doctors, insurance, and the American healthcare system.

Light Stretching with Dr. Jenny Talbert

On Sunday morning we woke up with Dr. Jenny Talbert (@drjennytalbert), a chiropractor practicing in Portland, Oregon for an interactive light stretching session. In this stretching session, Dr. Talbert taught us simple ways to move our bodies both in the morning as we start our day and in the evening on our way to bed. Dr. Talbert also put together a wonderful Sleep In 2023 Stretches PDF so you can continue doing these stretches even after the Sleep In!

Interview with Dr. Robert Turner II

Sleep In 2023 wrapped up with an incredible interview with Dr. Robert Turner II. Dr. Turner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Science and member of Project Sleep’s Expert Advisory Board.

In this interview, Dr. Turner shared about his journey toward taking on innovative community-focused sleep research. One of his recent initiatives is a new collaboration with Project Sleep & Dr. Michael Grandner. This study aims to better understand Black Americans’ perspectives on sleep and sleep disorders to improve future awareness efforts.
