Josh Andrews Speaks at Black Men’s Brain Health Conference

On Feb. 9, 2022, Josh Andrews was a featured speaker at the Black Men’s Brain Health Conference, in Los Angeles, CA. The Black Men’s Brain Health Conference brought together a multidisciplinary group of scientists and community leaders to increase representation of Black men in brain science research and reduce brain health disparities among Black men.

As one of the first speakers kicking off the event, Josh Andrews talked about experiencing sleepiness as a busy young athlete starting around age 12. He was eventually diagnosed with narcolepsy at age 26, while playing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Josh talked about adjusting to narcolepsy and working to find balance as an NFL player, husband, and father living with narcolepsy. He spoke about initially feeling embarrassed and isolated after his diagnosis, but how finding  the narcolepsy community inspired him to start sharing his story.

Finding Project Sleep opened my eyes to a community of other people who have narcolepsy, and if it wasn’t for that, I might still be feeling that isolation and anxiety that comes along with having narcolepsy.”

—Josh Andrews

Ultimately, Josh shared an important message about the importance of having conversations about Black men’s brain health and mental health and learning from each other.

After his presentation, Josh sat down with conference co-organizer and Project Sleep collaborator, Dr. Robert Turner, for a wonderful Q&A session. Audience members in-person and online spoke about being moved and inspired by Josh’s courage.

Huge thanks to Josh Andrews for raising his voice and huge thanks to Dr. Turner for including Josh and Project Sleep in this important inaugural event. Watch Josh’s speech (and the entire conference) available on the Black Men’s Brain Health Conference website starting by March 1st, 2022 here.
